Barge Canal centennial

Rather unnoticed by the media was this past weekend's centennial commemoration of the construction of the New York State Barge Canal -- or, the modern-day Erie Canal. The project began on April 23, 1905 and wasn't completed until 1918.

Lock 7-12 Canalfest slated for July 9-10

The Lock 7-12 Canalfest has a new date, and organizers say it will also have plenty of family entertainment.

The massive two-day festival is now scheduled for July 9 and 10, and will take place at six locations from Schenectady to Fort Hunter and showcase the history and recreation aspects of the Erie Canal.

Members of the chamber of commerce for both Schenectady and Montgomery counties have teamed up to put together the festival that has been in the planning stages for more than a year.

Originally planned for August, Wendy Glasser, co-chairwoman of the Canalfest committee, said the date was moved to avoid conflicts with other popular summer destinations.

"We decided that in August, there is track season [in Saratoga], and we wanted to maximize our potential," Glasser said.

Schenectady County Chamber President Charles Steiner said thousands of visitors from outside the area are expected to attend the weekend events.

"We're delighted to come together as a team, a partnership, a collaboration ... coming together to happen." The Canalfest will include craft shows, a car show, artisan demonstrations, traditional music, a fishing derby, skydiving demonstrations, contests, dancing and other events.

Activities will be spread throughout the two-county area along the Erie Canal in centennial celebration of the canal expansion in 1905.

Locations include the Schenectady Yacht Club, Freedom Park in Scotia, Maalwyck Park, River Stone Manor in Glenville, the Mabee Farm, Riverlink Park in Amsterdam, and the Schoharie Crossing in Fort Hunter.
